2017 Year in Review

First of all, if you are reading this…Thank You! My blog adventures are written specifically to connect with you, hopefully provide you with useful information, and entertain you. Without you, my blog would not exist!

In the beginning….

2017 was an exciting year! The blog officially launched on May 29th and I really had no idea what I was in for! I thought that I would start a blog, write content and people would read it. How hard could that be!? (I can hear other bloggers laughing!)

I had thought about starting a blog many times, but didn’t know how to do it and didn’t want to invest in something I wasn’t 100% certain about. I was motivated to start when I saw a post on Facebook from Pete and Heather Reese of It’s Lovely Life titled, ‘Start a Money Making Blog’. I didn’t realize that blogging could be a source of income! If that was the case, if  I could make a enough money to pay for the blog expenses, then it would be worth sharing my thoughts!

I built the site, teaching myself the in’s and out’s of WordPress using YouTube and articles written by fellow bloggers. I quickly realized that I had to get more active on social media. I didn’t even have a Twitter account at that point and barely even looked at Instagram!

Every morning was a challenge planning my day; making time for home, kids, blogging, and (oh yea) my full time job! Every evening was spent learning something new, preparing posts and trying to keep up. My husband and kids were, and continue to be, my biggest supporters.

I was hard on myself. I wasn’t getting enough views or followers or likes on social media. I was spending money and not making any, and felt guilty. My husband assured me that it will take time and you have to ‘spend money to make money’.

As time went on….

Then, I started joining groups and mom-blog pods. I couldn’t believe that there was this large blogging community across the world that came together to support each other, offer advice and help a fellow blogger in need. It was certainly a welcome surprise when I started making new friends in this new venture.

As a matter of fact, Sara at Travels with Tots helped me learn a new social media strategy today! And I’m always reaching out to Lauren at The Gabbing Ginger with all sorts of random questions and she is always happy to help.

I fumbled around (and still do) with what I should write about. Do people really want to hear about me and my struggles and successes? Do you care how I pack for a long vacation or does it help you? Does hearing about my struggles with my step-daughter give hope to others in the same position? I think about how I can use my blogging platform to help others, be it a small business or a charitable organization.

I hit a few milestones too! I reached over 5,000 followers on both Instagram and Twitter. I received my first ‘free’ products in lei of a review. And just a few days ago, I had my first paid post. I didn’t earn much, but you have start somewhere, right?

 Goals for 2018

Thinking about the new year, there are so many goals that I have for the growth of The Mommy on the Move.

  • Patience – To be more patient with myself and success with the blog. I know that I will be successful, I can feel it, I just have to be patient and take it one step at a time.
  • Steady Income – It doesn’t have to be life changing, but it would be nice to at least be able to pay for blog expenses with blog income!
  • Relationships – Build strong relationship with other bloggers and brands as well.
  • Life Balance – I tend to have moments of getting caught up in blogging that I forget about everything else. Then, step away completely to refresh. I would like to be able to balance all of life’s priorities in 2018. It is going to be important to my mental health that I do that.
  • Meaningful Content – As mentioned in the beginning of this article, The Mommy on the Move exists for you. In 2018, I want to continue to provide you information that is meaningful to you!

Happy New Year to all of you! 2018 is going to be amazing!

New Years

5 Ways to Keep your New Year’s Resolutions

Here’s the scenario: Christmas is over. The tree is still up. The house is a disaster after all the holiday fun. You are exhausted. The kids have been out of school for a week and are bored. And….it’s New Years Eve.

You head to a New Year’s Eve party or stay in your nice quiet (yet messy) home, and you are supposed to feel renewed and ready for the new year to begin. I don’t know about you, but all I can think about it trying to figure out how to stay in bed for an entire day!

New Years

Why I don’t like ‘New Year’s Resolutions’

Yep, I said it. I don’t like New Years Resolutions.

The start of a new year is a great time to reflect on what you accomplished (or didn’t accomplish) in the previous year. It’s also an ideal time to think about goals for yourself, define ways to improve yourself, and work on a plan to get them done.

However, the idea behind New Year’s Resolutions is that you need to start implementing those changes on January 1st.

The reality is, even though New Years Resolutions are  intended to be for the year,  we are lucky if we last a month. It’s tough to ask ourselves to think that one day in the year holds the power to helping us achieve a goal. Most people are not going to change something (quit smoking, start a new diet, etc.), until they are ready. It’s silly to think that everyone should be ready on January 1st.

What we should do instead of New Year’s Resolutions

The end of a year, and the beginning of another, is the perfect time to take a good look at ourselves and make some decisions about what we would like to do differently. When reflections turn into actions, we start to make progress. These actions will only be successful if we are motivated. So, create a list, prioritize and plan!

Make sure that you don’t have too many on your list; 3-5 is good. Once you have your list, prioritize them based on what you would like to start accomplishing first, second, etc. and start a plan.

5 Tips to ‘New Years Resolution’ Success

Here are some simple guidelines to creating your plan:

  1. Start with the goal that is easiest or quickest to achieve. Getting a quick ‘win’ will make you feel accomplished and motivate you to continue down your list.
  2. Start goals early in the year that will take a while to accomplish (like weight-loss), but remember, it doesn’t have to be on January 1st!
  3. Give yourself some time to let these first two changes set in before you implement a new one. For instance, you could plan to start goal #3 in March or April.
  4. Identify what success is for each goal. For instance, if losing weight is on your list, identify how many pounds would be successful to you. (Keep in mind everyone’s idea of success is going to be different)
  5. Write it down! In any fashion you choose – electronic, on paper, posted to the mirror in your bathroom – whatever works for you! Putting it in writing will make it ‘real’ and help you to achieve it.

The key to successful ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ is to not expect yourself to take on a lot of changes at one time. Space it out and prepare yourself for success. By identifying your goals at the beginning of the year, but giving yourself a few weeks/months to start those changes, you are giving yourself an opportunity to adjust to change and giving yourself a better chance at success!

What are your New Years Resolutions for 2018???

Peanut Clusters

Easy Chocolate Peanut Clusters Recipe

There are so many things that I love about his time of year. Christmas trees, decorations, the neighborhood houses all lit up, and of course the cookies and candy.

Christmas candy

In general, I am not a baker or a like to cook, but this time of year, I love to make Christmas candies and goodies to give to friends, family and co-workers. I usually like to try new things every year, however there is one candy that I make every single year; Peanut Clusters.

I make Peanut Clusters every year for a few reasons:

  1. They are so simple to make. All you need is 4 ingredients, a crock pot and a place to scoop them out and let them cool christmas candy
  2. It’s easy to make this in bulk – my husband has 50 people in his department and he likes to give each of them a Christmas card and a goody bag. (Yep, that’s a lot of candy!)
  3. Everyone loves it! Not only is it easy to make, but I get compliments every year on how good they are. I get asked for the recipe all the time, so I am sharing with you today!

Print Recipe!

  • 1 – 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2  – 16 oz. packages of Candiquick Chocolate Candy Coating
  • 1 oz. semi-sweet Hershey chocolate bar
  • 2 cans Spanish Peanuts (salted and roasted)

Peanut Clusters

Place all of the chocolate in a crock pot and melt on high for about 1 hour.

Once all the chocolate is melted, stir in the peanuts.

Place waxed paper on a flat surface, and drop tablespoonfuls and allow to cool.

Christmas candy

Put in air-tight container and place in the fridge to store.

These are great to give as a gift during the holidays.  You can place them on a platter for holiday parties, or put them in a goody bag to give away. Either way, they are certain to be a hit with anyone you share them with!

Stitch Fix

December Stitch Fix Review

I am so excited to be a part of the Stitch Fix family again! I started with Stitch Fix a few years ago. As a matter of fact, I think they were pretty new at that point. I took a short break, but decided to sign back up and received my first stash of Stitch Fix goods a few days ago!

How it Works

If you have never heard of Stitch Fix, or aren’t sure what they do, here is the down and dirty…

Having Stitch Fix is like having a personal stylist. Once your account is created, you fill out a profile so your stylist knows your sizes and what you like. You can also add links to your social profiles and Pinterest to give your stylist even more insight. Sign up for reoccurring deliveries (I have them delivered once a month) or request one when you are ready. Your stylist will hand pick items for you, based on your profile, and mail them to you. Keep what you want and return what you don’t want. You also receive a 25% discount if you keep all items!

That’s it!

Stitch Fix Perks

One of the many things that I love about Stitch Fix is that they send you items that you may not have chosen for yourself. Some times this works out fabulously! Other times, it may be a little too far out of your comfort zone. It’s a good thing that you only keep and pay for the items you like!

Because your stylist not only knows your sizes, but your height, weight and other measurements, they can hand pick items that are certain to fit. When you receive your Fix, it also comes with a note from your stylist, with ideas on how to put the pieces together. It also comes with ‘note cards’ with samples on how to style the items with other pieces you may already have in your closet.

If you are interested in trying Stitch Fix, they have a special offer just for my readers! You can receive your first Fix FREE because they are waiving the $20 styling fee through January! Click here to try Stitch Fix for FREE!

Now for the fun part! Check out my December Fix below:

Puffer Vest

Marc New York – Pierce Puffer Vest

stitch fix vest

This is an ideal pick for me! I have a few other puffer vests, but only in neutral colors.  I never would have picked a pink one for myself, but it goes with so many things that I already have in my closet! This one goes into the KEEP pile.

Vigoss – Erika Distressed Skinny Jean

Stitch Fix Jeans

Who doesn’t love distressed skinny jeans?? I already have a few pairs of these in my closet, but I could always use more! These fit so perfectly too, I can’t pass them up.  This one goes into the KEEP pile.

American Able – Vivianna Cut Out Knit Top

Stitch Fix Sweater

This 3/4 sleeve shirt is so cute and comfortable. It has a stylish cut out around the neckline, that is hard to see in the photo. I appreciate that my stylist read my profile because I indicated that I don’t like short-sleeve shirts, due to my body type, but love 3/4 sleeves! This one also goes into the KEEP pile.

Nakamol – Avalon Multi-Strand Beaded Choker

Stitch Fix Necklace

This is the first time that I received jewelry from Stitch Fix and I am so impressed. I have recently decided that I need to incorporate more jewelry into my style, so I am so excited for this piece. This one goes into the KEEP pile.

Alice Blue – Hallie Burnout Velvet Kimono

Stitch Fix Kimono

This is definitely not something that I would not have picked for myself. It’s cute, but something that I feel would look better on someone else. I have put it on a few times, and checked my note cards to see how to wear it, but I am still not sure. However, since one of the reasons that I joined Stitch Fix is to get out of my comfort zone, I appreciate this pick. In addition to that, with the 25% off I receive for keeping all items, it’s actually cheaper for me to keep in that return it! It also goes into the KEEP pile.

What you are your thoughts on my Fix? Would you have kept all the items or returned some?

The Best Places to Eat in South Lake Tahoe

When planning a vacation, knowing where to eat can be a challenge, especially if you have never visited before. Being a frequent visitor to Tahoe in the winter to ski, we have had an opportunity to eat at many restaurants around town.

There are a few things we take into consideration when finding a place to eat:

  1. What kind of food we want to eat
  2. Price
  3. Location – especially in the winter
  4. Local restaurant vs. chain restaurant – we like the local ones!

Below you will find a list of restaurants our family loves! From breakfast and quick eats to nice dinners. There is a little something on this list for everyone. You might try one the next time you visit South Lake Tahoe.

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day! I could eat breakfast at any time during day, including dinner time! With that said, below are our two favorite breakfast spots in South Lake Tahoe.

Driftwood Cafe – The Driftwood Cafe is located in the Heavenly Village and is only open for breakfast and lunch. We have never actually eaten lunch there, but have for breakfast many times. My favorite dish on the breakfast menu is the Eggs Benedict! We have eaten there a number of times with various people and everyone always raves about how great the food is.south lake tahoe

Red Hut Cafe – There are two Red Hut Cafe’s in South Lake Tahoe. The food is amazing at both spots, but my favorite is the original one. It’s a small place with a 50’s diner vibe, and you can tell it’s a restored house. They carried the same feel into the new restaurant on Ski Run Blvd (that is now open for dinner), and even added a Soda Fountain section, but I still love the feel of the original one. Bottom line, either one you choose to go to will have a delicious breakfast!

Quick Eats

Because we like to ski, we are usually on the mountain at lunch time. However, the few opportunities that we had to check out some lunch spots around town, we found a few that are worth mentioning!

Izzy’s Burger Spa – Looking for a burger in South Lake Tahoe? Look no further than Izzy’s Burger Spa. This small burger joint makes one of the best burgers I have ever had. Their menu contains extensive burger options along with chili and hot dogs. The fries are made perfectly every time; soft on the inside and crispy on the outside! They have limited seating indoors and quite a bit of outdoor seating. If it’s chilly outside, you may want to take it to go!

Blue Dog Gourmet Pizza – Looking for a pizza, salads or sandwiches? Blue Dog is the best choice in town! We have only eaten their pizza, but it’s definitely worth coming back to! Our favorite is the combination and the kids like the pepperoni here. They also deliver, which is very convenient when you don’t want to drive!

FiRE + iCE – Fire and Ice is one of our favorite dinner spots in South Lake Tahoe. Located in the Heavenly Village, Fire and Ice offers a unique dinner experience that is fun for the entire family. Each person selects the veggies, starch, protein and sauce that they would like cooked and put it into a bowl. Then, head over to the large circular grill in the middle of the room and hand your bowl to the chef. They will grill up your dinner while you watch their entertainment! The vibe is great, and everyone in our family gets what they like! They also have outside seating with fire pits, which is a great way to relax and have a drink after a day of skiing!south lake tahoe

The Naked Fish – Do you enjoy sushi? If so, The Naked Fish is the perfect spot! They have restaurants in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles and South Lake Tahoe. We have only eaten at the one in Tahoe, but it’s the only place we eat sushi when we are there. The atmosphere is trendy and fun, and a great spot for the entire family. They always have unique items on special, along with the standard sushi and roll options, along with basics for the kids (like chicken teriyaki bowls).

south lake tahoe

MacDuff’s Publick House – We had dinner at MacDuff’s only because my husband met the owner at the village. He invited us to come in and check it out and we fell in love immediately! We eat there every time we visit! Their featured dish is Real Shepard’s Pie. It is what my husband orders every time (pictured below.) I usually order the Chicken Pot Pie. I have thought about venturing out and trying something new, but when I only get to eat it once or twice a year, I stick with my favorite! The kids usually order the pizza, which they love as well!

south lake tahoe

Forest Buffet at Harrah’s – I’ll admit that I am not usually a fan of buffet’s, but this is one that I like. They offer a variety of foods which usually includes salad, Asian, Italian and American foods. There is usually a fresh carved meat such as turkey or prime rib. They also have seafood night which is worth the visit! The other thing that I like about this buffet is that there is something for kids too. Usually chicken strips and fries or pizza. It’s a great place for us to go with 2 teenage boys after a day of skiing!

Fine Dining

Capisce? Handmade Italian Cuisine – We absolutely love Capisce?! Keep in mind that I am Italian and my mom makes the BEST Sunday Gravy Sauce that you have ever tasted (at least that’s my opinion). With that said, it’s difficult for me to find Italian Restaurants that I like. I typically steer clear of the chain restaurants for that reason, but Capisce? is anything but that! Their pasta is fresh and sauces are amazing! Admittedly, I don’t eat red sauces at restaurants, but all of the others have been phenomenal! The kids love the pizza too!south lake tahoe

The Chart House – The night we ate at the Chart House the restaurant was basically empty, granted it was 10pm  at night because we were eating there before my sisters mid-night wedding! The service was amazing and the food, phenomenal. They also created a special menu for our party with my sister and brother-in-laws names and date of the wedding. It was a great touch! The only down side to this restaurant is that it is a little out of the way. In the winter, if it were snowing, I might not want to take that drive. On the up side, the views are absolutely breathtaking!

south lake tahoe

There are many other excellent restaurants in Tahoe. The ones listed are our 9 tops picks. We try to eat at each of these places least once or twice each year.

Do you have a favorite restaurant in South Lake Tahoe? Let us know! We will check out out next time we are there!

Key West Aloe Product Review

Finding good skin products can be difficult. There are many available in different price ranges and it can be hard to determine what products actually work well. I was asked by Key West Aloe to try some of their products and provide my honest opinion and write about them. So I did.

While the products that I am reviewing were provided by Key West Aloe at no cost to me, all thoughts and opinions in this article are solely mine, and not influenced in any way by Key West Aloe. It’s important to me that my readers know that I will always provide an honest review and only promote products that, in my opinion, are good.

About Key West Aloe

Key West Aloe has  been providing aloe based beauty products for 45 years. Many of us use aloe after a day in the sun, but Key West Aloe wanted to include the nourishment that aloe provides in everyday skin care products. Today, Key West Aloe has an extensive line of aloe based products for face, anti-aging, sun and after sun, with lines specific for men and pets.

Experience The Key West Aloe Difference

The Products

The Key West Aloe products that I tried were hand-picked for me. I expressed to Key West Aloe that I suffer from extremely dry skin, especially in the winter, and that I was looking for some good anti-aging products. With that information, I received and will be reviewing the following products:

  • Aloethera Intensive Body Moisturizer
  • Too Cool Anti-Aging Age-Defying Instant Hydration
  • KWA Overnight Anti-Aging Serum

Aloethera Intensive Body Moisturizer

Having told my representative at Key West Aloe that I had extremely dry skin, she sent me the Aloethera Intensive Body Moisturizer. Let me start by saying I have tried SO MANY moisturizers in my lifetime because of my dry skin. Some moisturized my skin, but left me feeling greasy. Others had to be applied multiple times in one day to keep my skin from becoming dry.

The Aleothera Intensive Body Moisturizer not only nourishes my skin, it soaks completely into my skin without leaving the greasy feel. After applying moisturizer to my legs, I typically have to wait 15 minutes or longer to put on my skinny jeans because if I don’t, it’s nearly impossible to pull them up with the lotion. After applying the Intensive Body Moisturizer, I was able to get dressed right away. This was a big win for me because who likes to sit around and wait for lotion to soak in?! At the end of the day, my skin was still soft and moisturized without having to reapply!

Keep in mind, however, that if you are looking for a perfume smelling lotion, this is not for you. This moisturizer is plant based and does not contain any fragrance.

Too Cool Anti-Aging Age-Defying Instant Hydration

When I first tried the Too Cool Instant Hydration, I expected it to be similar to toner mist because it’s a spray. What I quickly discovered is that it is NOT a mist. It’s a hydrating spray. After spraying, my face is wet, however, it soaks into your skin after a few minutes and leaves your skin feeling moisturized.

Keep in mind that if you are using this spray in the morning, make sure to leave time in your make-up routine if using it before applying make-up.

I also used this at night after washing my face, before using the Anti-Aging Serum.

KWA Overnight Anti-Aging Serum

The KWA Overnight Anti-Aging Serum was amazing! Not only is it silky smooth when applying, but it leaves your face feeling soft and moisturized through the night, into the morning. However, I know that what you are really wondering is ‘did it work?’

I can honestly say after using this serum (along with the Too Cool spray) for 3 weeks, I can definitely see an overall positive changes in my face. My skin is more firm and bright and feels softer to the touch. Do I still have wrinkles? Of course, but my skin is noticeably younger after 3 weeks. I’m looking forward to seeing what will happen after the jar is gone!

My overall review of these 3 Key West Aloe Products is that I would recommend them. Especially those with particularly dry skin (like me), this is a welcome change to many of the products that I have tried in the past!

10 Inspiring Ways to Show Gratitude

Want to view this post instead of read it? Click here!

It’s so easy as we move about our day to forget to recognize people in our lives. Whether it’s a teacher, coworker, friend or relative, too many times we don’t stop to show gratitude for what they do for us.

Did you know that it’s equally as easy during the course of our day to do something nice for someone? Taking the time to show gratitude for others not only makes the other person feel appreciated, but it also does so much for our own soul and well-being.

Not sure where to start? Below are a list of 10 things that you can do to show gratitude to others:

  1. Say ‘Thank you’ – Seems simple, right? We all know it’s important to say ‘Thank you’ when someone does something for us, but what about saying ‘Thank you’ for no reason at all? Think of how special someone will feel if you tell them, ‘Thank you for being you.’
  2. A Simple Note – Remember the days when someone would actually sit down and hand-write a letter? Me neither! Let’s make a pact to bring it back! Taking a few moments to hand-write a letter and send it through ‘snail mail’ would be such a great surprise to the person receiving it! Simply say ‘hello’, or ‘just wanted to say thank you for being my friend’. thank you
  3. Post-It Notes – You mean office supplies?? YES! Take a post it note and put someone where someone would never expect it! Write ‘Have a good day’ and post it in the car. Write SMILE and post it to the mirror. Write ‘I Love You!’ and put it in their lunch! thank you
  4. Share some wine – (or any other beverage you choose, such as coffee or lemonade) – The point is to invite someone over for no reason at all! Share the bottle of wine and have some conversation (with or without kids running around!) By taking the time to just sit and have conversation with no excuse of a play date, or needing to do something. Just to come talk! Sounds amazing, right?!
  5. Give compliments – It’s always nice to give compliments on a special day, like your husband telling you that you look beautiful on date night. However, what I am talking about is random compliments. Examples could be telling a bank teller that you like her hair, or his shirt. You could tell the checkout clerk that they are doing a great job. Or you could thank your mail person for always bringing you the mail on time!
  6. Food Delivery! – Make someone one’s favorite meal or snack and take it to them FOR NO REASON! If you’re like me (a not-so-great cook), you can go to the store and get something , and that’s OK too! It’s the gesture of thinking of someone enough to go out of your way to do something nice. (Hint: It doesn’t even have to be their favorite food!  Any food would work!)
  7. Gratitude Journal/Jar – Start a gratitude journal or jar. Each day write down something that you are grateful for and put it in the journal or on a piece of paper in the jar. Watch the blessings pile up. On those days when you are feeling down and need a little pick-me-up, head to the gratitude journal/jar and read a few. It’s guaranteed to give you a boost!    gratitude journal    gratitude jar
  8. Pay for someone’s coffee/meal – Paying an extra $5 at Starbuck or offering to pay for the order behind you are ways to accomplish this. If you have the means and are willing, you can also pay for a strangers dinner at a restaurant. It can be known who are you are or you can do is anonymously, it’s up to you. Either way, I guarantee that you put a smile on someone’s face!
  9. Do something thoughtful – This one is vague and meant to be! Think about something that someone could do for you that you think is thoughtful. It could be something simple or complex, and do that thing for someone else! They may (or may not) appreciate it as much as if someone did if for you, but I guarantee that you will feel better when you’re done!
  10. Hug! – Take a moment out of your day and hug someone! It’s shouldn’t be a quick ‘What’s up?’ hug, but a deliberate one.  When my son was little he always hug every friend. We called him the ‘overly excited hugger’ because he would knock is friends over with his hugs! My other son, at 11-years-old, still hugs his buddies when greeting them. These boys set an example for me that the moment is always right to give a hug!give thanks
